Filete de Atum em Azeite com Tomilho Santa Catarina | 120 g
3,99 €

Pole and line" fishing

The rating "Dolphin Safe" e "Friend of the sea"
As an ecological appreciation and recognition, tuna fishing in the Azores, known as "Salto e Vara", has been certified since 1998 by the non-governmental organisation Earth Island Institute as "Dolphin Safe", due to its low predatory characteristics, and since 2001 as "Friend of the sea" and is the first tuna fishery in the world to be awarded this type of certification.
Leap and Pole" fishing, a sustainable model.
Since it is an artisanal method, "Salto e Vara" fishing requires all the experience of the fishermen on the island of São Jorge.
They start by detecting the presence of the tuna using binoculars. Then they approach, switch off the engines and switch on the showers which, by simulating the escape of the small fish on which the tuna feed, hide the fishermen from their field of vision.
Then they throw the bait into the sea to attract the shoal and start the fishing activity. It's an example that allows fishermen to catch only the fish they need without jeopardising other species or smaller fish. Unlike the trawler fishing practised by the large commercial fleets, the centuries-old "Salto e Vara" fishing gear practised by the region's tuna fishermen is considered environmentally friendly, as it allows the fisherman to select the fish and does not involve by-catch.
