The Pope's Blanket

Typical of the Serra da Estrela region, this is a special blanket that is unique in the world.

Handmade from the wool of typical Portuguese sheep breeds, the Churra Mondegueira from Guarda and Covilhã and the Churra do Campo from Penamacor.

After the sheep have been sheared, the wool is spun and woven on a handloom, then the blankets go to a pile of water which, together with water, washes and felts the wool, and this mixture looks like a porridge, hence the name "blanket of porridge". In the end, they go to a carding machine, which, with very special combs, pulls the wool out, making it long, so characteristic of these blankets.

The manufacturing process is restricted to the less rainy months between March and October to allow the blankets to dry better on the outdoor ramblers.

Natural and brown sheep's wool, the other colours are dyed with red, yellow, brown or green stripes.
